CHAPTER THIRTY
FINALLY, AN HOUR and a half later, there was a break in the constant stream of people. Several of them had left when I told them that the new exhibit wasnât up, but plenty of them piled into the back to look at the old exhibits again.
I tapped in Billyâs number on the phone. When I got him, he said, âListen, Lorry, I donât have time to talk; I have to leave for Coyote Moon.â
Oh, no, I thought, heâs hauling John off to jail. âJohn?â
âNo, no, heâs fine. Iâll tell you tonight when I come over. Iâll be there between six and six-thirty, and we can talk then. But I need to leave right now.â
âTonightâs Aidenâs karate class.â
âOh, thatâs right! Well, weâll work something out. See ya then. Gotta go. Love you.â
I said I love you and bye and sat there stupefied. I had waited for hours to tell him, and now I didnât even get to say a thing. But at least he wasnât taking John into jail. Why was he going to Coyote Moon, anyway? Another suspect or something? I wouldnât find out for hours, if then.
Usually, as soon as Billy entered the house, Aiden spent every second with him. And on a karate night? Theyâd talk karate from the moment Billy came through the front door until they had returned from the lesson and Aiden was tucked safely into bed.
A few more people straggled in but walked through the exhibits quickly and left. I had just checked my email for the dozenth time when I glanced out the window to see a sheriffâs car pull in front of the post office. That was curious, I thought. Billy was in Coyote Moon. When Derek got out of the car and walked in, I figured he was just checking his mail. Many of the people in Rutledge had post office boxes because for so long, several places in town had no mail delivery.
But when Derek came out a few minutes later with Zack, it confused me. At least this time, Zack didnât have handcuffs on and Derek even opened the front passenger door and let him in that way. Then he made a big U-turn and drove away.
Less than fifteen minutes later, the sheriffâs car pulled up in front of the post office again and dropped Zack off. Zack got out of the front passenger door and waved when the car drove off. But he wasnât smiling, and when he walked back into the post office, his head was hanging down.
Before I had a chance to even process that, I heard Aiden skipping down the hallway. I heard him say hello to Petra as he skipped by, and then he skipped into my room and into my arms.
âHi, Mommy!â He leaned down to hug Bingo. âHi, Bingo!â Then he turned back to me. âDid you get my books?â
Smiling, I opened the drawer, pulled out his books, and handed them to him. âThanks, Mom! Now Iâm going to go upstairs to pick out the new exhibit.
